Design a Key Factor in Award-Winning Schools

January 13, 2025

When it comes to K-12 education, architectural design is a key factor in today’s award-winning schools. From colors and patterns that inspire young students to strategically placed natural lighting, a school’s architecture and design are the backbone of creating an environment where students will thrive and grow.

Recently, Sterlington Elementary in Sterlington, LA was one of seven Louisiana schools named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Designed by TBA in 2010, Sterlington Elementary uses color in an unconventional and functional way.

As stated in their application, “[Sterlington] became known as the ‘crayon box’ because of the wonderful colorful exterior that is the perfect setting for an elementary school. The exterior is not the only area of the school that is colorful, the interior of the building is just as bright and full of beautiful primary colors. Our school is divided into three wings, and each is a vibrant primary color of green, yellow, and orange along with other colorful accents making it a welcoming atmosphere.  Students, teachers, and families cannot help but feel a sense of happiness as they walk into the beautiful building each day.”

While designed for the future, Sterlington’s population saw unprecedented growth, requiring even more space at the school. TBA added an additional 12 classrooms in 2023, making Sterlington the largest elementary school in Ouachita Parish.

TBA’s award-winning designs can also be found at Boley Elementary School in West Monroe, LA. After a devastating fire in 2019 resulted in a total loss, Boley Elementary School was rebuilt in 2022.

The 45,000 SF school features classrooms, a multipurpose room, an administration area, library, computer lab, and cafeteria. North-facing support spaces allow natural light without glare, enhanced by acoustical panels that absorb sound and add color. Classrooms are filled with colors promoting playfulness and positivity, fostering an ideal learning environment for both students and teachers.

In 2023, Boley was named a National Blue Ribbon School, as well. Additionally, TBA received several awards for their work at Boley including Glass Magazine’s Best Project Team, Build Magazine’s Best Elementary School Rebuild Design, and ASID Firm of the Year.

When architecture emphasizes safety, accessibility, and sustainability, it provides a nurturing and inclusive environment for all. Ultimately, well-designed schools support both academic growth and personal development, making them essential foundations for thriving, future-ready communities.
